A Garden in Time
This is a book about the genus rhododendron and the greig Family. As a child, I have memories of visiting my great grandmother's house in Royston, British Columbia. I remember her dogs Jill and Sheba, the rock paths around the garden, and the closeness of the house to the shores of the sea. I was completely unaware of what a giant Mary Greig was in the world of Rhododendrons. It wasn't until years later, after I completed my degree in biology at the university of Victoria, where she was posthumously awarded an honourary doctorate, that I began to understand her impact. Rhododendrons have always been a part of my life. From the first planted bed of our family home in Campbell River, to the overwhelming trusses surrounding my grandparents' home in Nanoose Bay. As I grew up, the word "rhodo" often echoed in my ears. Now, after one year spent living with my mother, my wife and two small boys in my childhood home on Vancouver Island, I have completed what I hope is a contribution to help tell the story of Ted and Mary Greig, and the genus Rhododendron.
